While Claiming Populist Bona Fides, 2020 Hopefuls Cash In On Book Deals

Writing a book a few years before an election is often a sign that a politician has presidential ambitions. In their recent personal financial disclosures, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) all disclosed recent book deals or royalties. However, in a political climate dominated by populist grassroots, these lucrative book deals cast doubt on these 2020 hopefuls’ ability to relate to middle- and working-class grassroots that have taken control of their party.
