The Story Behind Joe Manchin’s Claim About Hillary Clinton in 2016

June 6, 2018

During an interview with Politico, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) claimed he “repeatedly threatened to revoke” his support for 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The problem, he claimed, was that Clinton said in March 2016 that she planned “to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” It was a critical gaffe for Clinton, who made the remark in Ohio, a state whose southern border touches West Virginia Kentucky, two of the largest coal-producing states in the country.

Reflecting on his support for Clinton, Manchin called it “a mistake politically” to back the former secretary of state whose approval ratings made her toxic in the Mountain State.

Manchin is fighting for his political life in 2018, running against Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. As such, his claims about threatening to revoke his support for Clinton should be looked at in the context of the 2016 campaign. AR Intel takes a look at what Manchin said in 2016 about backing Clinton — to see it for yourself, become an AR Intel Insider today!
