Billionaire environmentalist and Democrat megadonor Tom Steyer announced this week that he would pour an additional $10 million into the 2018 midterms in effort to boost Democrats’ chances. This is the same megadonor who spent $70 million in 2014 and $100 million in 2016. When the dust settled after both of those cycles, reporters came to the same sober assessment: Steyer’s money was wasted. Will the same be true in 2018? Stay tuned.
On the Senate side this week, a new poll found Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) narrowly leading Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) among Hispanics in Florida. That’s bad news for the Democrat, who should have a much larger margin in that demographic if he hopes to win reelection in November.
On the House side, primaries in Minnesota, Connecticut, and Wisconsin helped set the fields in critical races this fall. Meanwhile, the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), which is closely associated with House Speaker Paul Ryan, will spend $10 million on ads in 14 races across the country this month.
