Kara Eastman narrowly defeated former Rep. Brad Ashford (D-NE) on Tuesday in a major win for the party’s left-wing, liberal die-hards. Ashford, who represented the district from 2015-2017, lost to now-Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) in 2016. Eastman will face Bacon in the general election this November.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) earlier this year named Ashford in its “Red to Blue” program, in which they announce top seats they want to flip in the upcoming election cycle. Eastman’s fringe campaign upended those plans with her win this week.
Immediately political prognosticators reversed their rulings. Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball had previous called the district a “toss up,” when it was thought Ashford would be the Democrat nominee. After Eastman’s win and sensing how out of step she is for Nebraska’s Second Congressional District, they moved the seat to “leans Republican.”
